What We Did | |
![]() |
We got to work doing what we were trained to do. We set up our hospital in the camp's SS barracks. The stronger survivors were cleaned and fed and trained to take care of the weaker ones. |
|
From surgeons to medics to drivers, we all used our skills and learned new ones to help round the clock. When we arrived people were dying at the rate of hundreds day from dysentery and other diseases. By the third day, TIME Magazine reported we lost only two survivors. It was nothing short of a miracle to us, even as we look back on it over half a century later.
